About the Artist

Troy Bunch

My journey as a professional artist began at the age of nineteen when I dropped out of college in order to get my first real job creating illustrations for training programs. I worked full-time while doing various freelance art projects on the side and attending college at night. I eventually earned a BA from Metropolitan State University of Denver and an MA from the University of Colorado.

After moving around he country a few times for better jobs, I eventually ended up in the Washington DC area in order to take positions heading up the Visual Communications departments for a National Training Center and then for the External Affairs department of a large federal agency.

A few years back I transitioned to working full-time as a fine artist. I work from my studio in Maryland and made the creation of fine art my full-time job.

I’ve exhibited my work in juried shows across the U.S. and Europe. My work has been featured in several prominent art publications, and I am currently an “Artist in Residence” at the Crossroads Art Center in Richmond, VA, and an “Exhibiting Artist” at the Art League in Alexandria, VA, the Maryland Federation of Art in Annapolis, MD, and the Art League of Rockville, MD.

Artist Statement

I’ve liked to draw and paint for as long as I can remember. Because I felt I was pretty good at it, I pursued a career that has allowed me to use this skill to make a living.

While I’ve used a wide variety of art mediums over the years old school oil on canvas has always been my favorite. I describe my work as imaginative realism, fantasy and surrealism. My main objective is to create something that has personal meaning and relevance to me. At the same time, I want the audience to enjoy my work enough to want to display it in their personal space.

Much of my inspiration comes from illustrators who created cover art for science fiction and fantasy novels that I read when I was young. Artists like Frank Frazetta, Michael Whelan
and Boris Vallejo were among the most influential.
